Ambridge - Beaver County, PA
Shortly after polls opened in Southern Beaver County, PA at 7:00 am, voters have reported lines at all eleven polling precincts stretching anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes. While a few voters have complained that polling machines in some precincts are confusing to operate adding time to the process, most voters we’ve spoken with have enjoyed the excuse of waiting to vote in order to spend some quality time outside on this sunny, 70 degree November day.
Tucked along the Southwestern part of the Ohio-Penn border, Beaver County and its 122,000 residents typically vote Democrat. Recently, however, polls have indicated that John McCain enjoys an 6-8 point lead. Considered a key county for John McCain to win if he is to carry Pennsylvania, both the Obama and the McCain Campaigns have spent lots of effort over the last few days wooing local residents and turning out the vote.
Local organizers for Obama feel that despite increased negative ads and fear mongering by the Republican campaign, their grassroots ‘Get Out the Vote’ movement combined with the warm weather will make this county win-able for Obama. Local campaign volunteers report reaching roughly 15,000 registered voters over the last four days and that morale amongst supporters is very high. Everyone is anxious to see how the hard work will have paid off.

We didn’t realize this, but there is town called Beaver in the Valley of Beaver, in the County of Beaver, PA; and that’s where we’re staying. There are five of us ‘free-agent’ pollsters from New Jersey working out here and trust me when I tell you that it’s around the clock. We arrived late yesterday around 8pm, got some dinner, and went right to work fixing up for GOTV (get out the vote) until about 1am. Beaver has been subdivided into five staging locations, and they brought us here to work with the local volunteers who are phone banking or canvassing; we’re basically hyping them up and getting them coached up. We are staying with two amazingly nice families, just awesome! If this post is a little jumbled, then I apologize, but there’s really no time for great prose. As I type this I’m waiting for my next wave of canvassers and phone bankers to arrive, and once they do, it’ll be back to the grind until about 8pm, when we might take a break.
So far the morale is pretty solid. Lots of the staffers have been here for months and haven’t had a day off in weeks. It’s getting pretty tense, but everyone is excited. Keep ya posted.

Dear Friends,
Happy Halloween!
The scariest thing today for most folks will not be ghosts and ghouls, AIDS candy, or pedophiles, but the thought of another four years of Republican leadership at what has become the most haunted house in recent memory the White House. As much comfort as the polls can give, I still have never been this scared on Halloween. I’m sickened each time Sarah Palin takes the stage as thoughts of President Palin and being forced to live as a Christian Fundamentalist crowd my brain. With every lie that McCain spreads about how much he’ll help the middle class, I cringe. It’s scary that there are still at least 40% of people that really believe him, and that truly think he’s a better choice than Barack Obama; it’s insane. Joe the Plumber? Get the eff outta here. What kind of Mickey Mouse campaign are they running?
Friends, get up, get out, and make sure you vote on Election day. Take off work, get the kids a sitter, cut class, but damnit, get the vote out. Remember, all the momentum, all the hype, all that we’ve worked for over the last two…
