Too Much Regulation: Repeal the Pure Food and Drug Act!

The NeoCon - Circa 1906

For too long the meat packing and pharmaceutical industries have shouldered the burden and blame for irresponsible, blind consumerism. The passage of The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, regulating the production and sale of toxic food and drug products, will have disastrous and crippling effects on its respective industries.

Upton Sinclair, known socialist and person most responsible for the recent, unjustified public outrage, asserts that there are inherent injustices in free market capitalism. This view is categorically inane. Furthermore, the underlying philosophy of this assertion is at complete odds with the spirit of self-reliance and personal responsibility that this country has been built upon. The American people need no more affirmation than that which is afforded to them by the invisible hand of the market. It is this mechanism of economic natural selection, the emphasis of ingenuity and development that has spurred the growth and prominence of this Nation. Firms by nature will always be inclined to provide the highest and best quality good in order to attract buyers. Responsible buyers will always be aware of the processes, production, and future value of the goods they purchase. No government hand holding is needed amongst this great lot!

By signing this act into law, the Roosevelt Administration and the 56th Congress have overstepped the scope of their duties and responsibilities as defined by the constitution. No one should be surprised when the meat packing industry and pharmaceutical industry succumb to the weight of these new regulations and collapse.

Republican Government: Good Intentions, Failed Results?

Henry David Thoreau once said, “That government is best which governs not at all.” In the land where anything is possible, where you carve your own path and create your own destiny, no other thought could sum up the attitude toward government any better. Many people credit this philosophy of self-reliance and individualism as traits that made American people great, drove us to work harder, and held us to a higher standard of success. Each election, we choose between those we feel will govern more and those who will govern less. Democrat or Republican, neither candidate campaigns on extraneous government, exorbitantly high taxes, or restricting individual freedoms. On the contrary, we are promised less interference, fewer taxes, smaller government, and more rights for the individual, but despite our eventual choice and the promises made to us, we make little progress in these pursuits. No matter the leadership, the government spends more, grows in size, and becomes more powerful. Individual rights are infringed upon for the ‘greater good’ of the nation and hard earned tax money is frivolously pissed away by men we only see once or twice a year on programming we’re not always made aware of. It should come as no surprise that Americans still hold on to the thought, “That government is best which governs not at all.” Rightfully so, Americans are weary of their relationship with the government, because the government by and large has lied to them over and over again without remorse. And so, each election cycle, we are faced with the choice between those we believe will govern less and those who will govern more. No matter our choice, logic…

President Bush - Do Us One More Favor.

Dear President Bush,

On behalf of the people of The United States of America, I hereby ask of you a proclamation of national (federal) holiday this November 4, 2008, a day commonly referred to as Election Day.  Mr. President, as was the case when you exercised this power on Jan 2, 2007, creating a national day of mourning in honor of President Ford, I compel you to, again, use your good judgement and recognize the historic value and importance of this upcoming national event, by encouraging the participation of all citizens.

Although we believe that our elected representatives in federal government listen to our concerns and ideas throughout their service, truly, we the citizens, are afforded only one day to assuredly make our opinion count. Often, for many of us, it is not easy to make our voice heard on election day. Long lines, family obligations, school, work, and/or other reasons work against us in our desire to participate in our democracy. As I’m sure you’ll agree, we are a diligent people, and many of us suffer through these aforementioned detriments to participate, but it need not be so.

This election is of utmost importance to our country. We have lost faith in our government. No offense, sir, but we want change; the direction is not yet clear. However, what is clear is that this election promises to have one of the largest turnouts in history. Sadly, there will be many, who although wishing to participate, will not be able to for whatever circumstance. By making election day a federal holiday, just this once, you’ll afford more people the opportunity to make good discharging their obligation to vote as a citizen of The United States.

What’s in a Name? - You Are What You Eat.

Barack Obama Cannot Be Trusted!

For anyone who may have missed this, above is a link to a clip from a McCain rally in Minnesota from last week. The idea expressed by the woman at the end is not a new one. Barack Obama’s name is one of many handicaps that he’s had to deal with along the campaign trail for the last two years or so.  We’ve never had a president with an “ethnic sounding” name. Many people seem to be uneasy with the name Barack Hussein Obama regardless of how they feel about his policies.

Here’s the interesting part in my eyes. The rambling, stuttering, ill-conceived statements of this red-white-and-blue-blooded American and McCain’s response was as follows:

Woman: “I can’t trust Obama…I’ve read about him…He’s an Arab.”

McCain: “No ma’am. He’s a decent family man, citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues, and that’s what this campaign is all about.”

We can see that ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAS CHANGED in this country. Just as Russian equaled communist in the 80s, Arab is now synonymous with terrorist. McCain’s response, which I find abhorrent, just feeds the fire because it seems to acknowledge that were Barack Obama an Arab or of Arab descent, you would be well within your right not to trust him.

This should act as a red flag to all the ridiculously naive political analysts on television and online pundits who think that race is not much of a factor in this election. Hogwash, I say. The Bradley Effect is pronounced and significant. The average person knows, contrary to adamant racists like those of white supremacist groups and the like, that racism is morally…

Elitism: I Know You Are, But What Am I?

There are many buzz words and phrases that can be heard in every campaign as well as politics in general. Words and phrases like “maverick” and “out of touch.”

Another such word is “elitist.” We hear this word all time, generally used as a knock against those perceived as liberal Democrats. This word is a misnomer because it applies to all of American politics in a bipartisan fashion.

Dictionary.com defines elitism as the practice of or belief in rule by a favored group(elite). This term is generally spouted by Republican supporters such as Lynn Forester de Rothschild who take aim at people like Barack Obama for being “elitist” (she ironically supported Hillary Clinton before Barack Obama received the Democratic nomination).

Yes, those Rothschilds. So where does she get off claiming that Barack Obama is an elitist you ask? Especially when she’s just along for the ride, born into one of the richest families on Earth? Surely she realizes that the wealthy have almost all the power in the world, right?

American politics IS elitism. If John McCain were elected the 44th President of the United States, he would become just another example of a male, white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant who comes from money to occupy the Oval Office. The most notable exceptions of recent memory are JFK, who was Catholic (blasphemy!) and Richard Nixon who came from a dirt poor family of Quakers. This country has always been run by rich, white, Protestant men. I believe that qualifies as a “favored group.”

Obama is often criticized by various conservatives and Republicans for his intellectual elitism. People feel that his Columbia and Harvard pedigree and big city political experience makes him unable to understand the…
