When “1080p” means more to people than “ISBN” does, anything that gets people away from the TV and reading again is great, even if it is Harry Potter or Twilight. Despite the cookie-cutter, fifth grade reading level trash that Dan Brown and others make millions off of is no substitute for the genre redefining wordsmith of Hemingway or Hunter S. Thompson, anyone who gets people reading is begrudgingly laudable in my book, as much as it pains me. After all, the passive entertainment of watching television is not nearly as intellectually stimulating as active participation, imagination, and direct interaction with a text. Some even go as far as to say that words have a life of their own and metaphysically perhaps even more so. Great words travel through time and space giving life eternal to the genius of authors who assembled them previously. However, even words have feelings, and there comes a time when measured in whole their value to literacy and intellectualism is so low that they can’t justify the collateral damage to the environment their publishment would incur. Upon this abuse, words must come together in representation of the letters they contain and the meaning they refer to, put their proverbial “feet” down, and state, “We’re not gonna take it.” This is when words go on strike.
CNN reported today that Sarah Palin could currently be in talks with various publishers regarding a book deal surrounding her personal experience during the 2008 Presidential Campaign that would total more than $7 million. The thought of Sarah Palin authoring anything other than a resignation address from politics is nauseating. The thought that millions of people might be…
Not exactly the headline you’d expect to see Sunday morning as you stop at the bottom of the driveway, bend down, pick up the paper, and make the habitual groggy-steaming-coffee-in-hand-slipper-footed-robe-donned turn back toward the homestead, circa 8:20am, thirty-five minutes before firing up the ole minivan, loading up the kids, and driving to choir practice, but nonetheless a definite possible preview of a tribune near you. The first portion of the headline, much to the chagrin of Republicans everywhere, primarily those known for two-word only headline skimming, who in the resulting fit of joy, happily call friends and family in western times zones waking them up at ungodly hours only to find out a minute too late that A) it does not refer to Obama’s Presidential-Elect position but rather his Senate seat B) that’s only the beginning of the problem.
It’s a fact that there are plenty of Northeastern Republican supporters who absolutely despise Hillary Clinton’s existence. Stemming all the way back to when she loaded up all the carpet she had, put it in a really big bag, slung it over her shoulder, and moved to New York, there’s a lot of bitterness left over from her ascension to Pat Moynihan’s vacated senate seat at the very moment most Clinton family haters thought they’d finally be rid of Clintons in government. Eight years later, another sigh of relief for Republicans was had at the hands of Barack Obama, an unlikely dark horse candidate, who narrowly defeated a would be shoo-in for President, Hillary Clinton. Four months later, despite a statistical dead heat at the beginning of the race, a lengthy head start for Republican candidate John…
In case you didn’t catch the news last night or today, Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama is now President Elect Barack Obama. Mission accomplished, right? Now it’s time to move forward, because there’s a steaming pile waiting to greet him at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
(Reasonable) McCain supporters: You voted for a candidate and he lost. I’m sure you have your reasons and I respect that, even though I disagree with you. Maybe you have a certain level of income that could be threatened under an Obama administration, you are adamantly opposed to abortion, or you support the war in Iraq. I can’t identify, but once again, I have to respect your opinions and political stance.
[Un(Reasonable)] McCain supporters: You can’t even begin to fathom how 52% of America voted for a socialist with no record or experience; they must have been either tricked by his empty promises or have felt like it was the politically correct thing to do. I’ve seen posts all over the place with people saying that Obama is not their president, or they’ll never recognize Obama as president (kind of like how terrorist organizations refuse to recognize Israel’s existence despite the obvious reality). Hopefully, you will calm down and realize that Obama is in fact pro-America and deeply cares for all of her citizens. People are expecting some level of extreme leftism out of Obama, but I really feel like he’s going to be more left-center. He may disappoint conservatives for being too liberal, but he will also disappoint liberals for not being liberal enough.
Whether you agree with Barack Obama or not, you cannot deny the fact that he succeeded in inspiring millions…
Ambridge - Beaver County, PA
Shortly after polls opened in Southern Beaver County, PA at 7:00 am, voters have reported lines at all eleven polling precincts stretching anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes. While a few voters have complained that polling machines in some precincts are confusing to operate adding time to the process, most voters we’ve spoken with have enjoyed the excuse of waiting to vote in order to spend some quality time outside on this sunny, 70 degree November day.
Tucked along the Southwestern part of the Ohio-Penn border, Beaver County and its 122,000 residents typically vote Democrat. Recently, however, polls have indicated that John McCain enjoys an 6-8 point lead. Considered a key county for John McCain to win if he is to carry Pennsylvania, both the Obama and the McCain Campaigns have spent lots of effort over the last few days wooing local residents and turning out the vote.
Local organizers for Obama feel that despite increased negative ads and fear mongering by the Republican campaign, their grassroots ‘Get Out the Vote’ movement combined with the warm weather will make this county win-able for Obama. Local campaign volunteers report reaching roughly 15,000 registered voters over the last four days and that morale amongst supporters is very high. Everyone is anxious to see how the hard work will have paid off.

Even one of the hardest hit areas of economic despair, Western Pennsylvania, with its beautiful bridges, rivers, and hard working people, is filled with serenity as the prospect of change inches ever closer. It’s hard to imagine that in the area surrounding Ambridge, PA, where jobs are a premium, unemployment is high, and economic despair is no longer a prospect but a reality, that anyone is part of ‘the nation of whiners’. In an area that could understandably have justified disdain for the uncontrollable circumstances thrust upon them over the last eight years, the silence is deafening. Working men clad in flannel shirts tucked into jeans enjoy that which they have, a beautiful, sixty-five degree day, sunshine, and the thought of a start to a better life less than thirty-six hours away.
The door to the Obama GOTV office in Ambridge is wide open and “She Loves You” by The Beatles fills the air as people mull around making preparations for the last ditch effort to get people to the polls. Morale is high, really high. Everyone is starting to realize that all the work, blood, sweat, and tears are most certainly paying dividends. Today, The Pittsburgh Gazette sent out their newspaper wrapped in a “Defeat Obama” advertisement paid for by the NRA, but with each tick off the clock, all the Beaver County volunteers are proving that Obama’s not the only one in this campaign with steel in his spine.
They’re not buying, and anyone familiar with the resilience of Western PA should not be surprised by the tenacity of the local volunteers of the Obama campaign in the face of last ditch negative campaigning by John…
