The NeoCon - Circa 1906
For too long the meat packing and pharmaceutical industries have shouldered the burden and blame for irresponsible, blind consumerism. The passage of The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, regulating the production and sale of toxic food and drug products, will have disastrous and crippling effects on its respective industries.
Upton Sinclair, known socialist and person most responsible for the recent, unjustified public outrage, asserts that there are inherent injustices in free market capitalism. This view is categorically inane. Furthermore, the underlying philosophy of this assertion is at complete odds with the spirit of self-reliance and personal responsibility that this country has been built upon. The American people need no more affirmation than that which is afforded to them by the invisible hand of the market. It is this mechanism of economic natural selection, the emphasis of ingenuity and development that has spurred the growth and prominence of this Nation. Firms by nature will always be inclined to provide the highest and best quality good in order to attract buyers. Responsible buyers will always be aware of the processes, production, and future value of the goods they purchase. No government hand holding is needed amongst this great lot!
By signing this act into law, the Roosevelt Administration and the 56th Congress have overstepped the scope of their duties and responsibilities as defined by the constitution. No one should be surprised when the meat packing industry and pharmaceutical industry succumb to the weight of these new regulations and collapse.

“Retailers are forecasting less than positive numbers and in turn are slashing prices, staying open longer, and advertising more in order to entice consumers to buy the worthless crap they’re used to selling at 400% profit margins.” Maybe you’ve heard that? Today? Five or more times? Apparent doom is on the horizon for retailers; fire and brimstone are waiting in the wings, ready to rain down on capitalists everywhere. Your mission: Make the reindeer work overtime! Go buy everything and there by save the economy, planet, and humankind with just a swipe of the credit card. Read between the lines and it’s a little hard to feel bad for these whiners.
Let’s operate under the basic micro economic assumption that retailers would close doors if the revenue of selling product x didn’t cover the cost of selling product x. That is, even during this crazy-low demand, terrible shopping season we’re having, retailers would rather keep inventory than sell it for a loss. Why should you care? Maybe you shouldn’t, but have you set foot in a store recently? Today I bought a pair of Timberland boots for less than 50% of the suggested retail price. I also bought a Zoo York sweatshirt for 20.99, regular price $49.99. Have to figure even with the increased work force retailers employ during this time of year and the increased cost associated with the higher manpower, the longer hours they’re staying open and more money being spent on advertising, they’re still turning a profit with the “rock bottom prices”. Bottom line, if the economy were good, we would pay far closer to the suggested retail price for all our gifts,…
Even one of the hardest hit areas of economic despair, Western Pennsylvania, with its beautiful bridges, rivers, and hard working people, is filled with serenity as the prospect of change inches ever closer. It’s hard to imagine that in the area surrounding Ambridge, PA, where jobs are a premium, unemployment is high, and economic despair is no longer a prospect but a reality, that anyone is part of ‘the nation of whiners’. In an area that could understandably have justified disdain for the uncontrollable circumstances thrust upon them over the last eight years, the silence is deafening. Working men clad in flannel shirts tucked into jeans enjoy that which they have, a beautiful, sixty-five degree day, sunshine, and the thought of a start to a better life less than thirty-six hours away.
The door to the Obama GOTV office in Ambridge is wide open and “She Loves You” by The Beatles fills the air as people mull around making preparations for the last ditch effort to get people to the polls. Morale is high, really high. Everyone is starting to realize that all the work, blood, sweat, and tears are most certainly paying dividends. Today, The Pittsburgh Gazette sent out their newspaper wrapped in a “Defeat Obama” advertisement paid for by the NRA, but with each tick off the clock, all the Beaver County volunteers are proving that Obama’s not the only one in this campaign with steel in his spine.
They’re not buying, and anyone familiar with the resilience of Western PA should not be surprised by the tenacity of the local volunteers of the Obama campaign in the face of last ditch negative campaigning by John…
John McCain thinks you’re an idiot, and he’s banking on it. With less than a month before the election, McCain/Palin refuse to acknowledge, let alone address, your concern about the economy or the war. Instead they figure that you’re more interested in the tabloid journalism character assassination that they’ll utilize for the last remaining campaign days.
I’m not shocked, but I am appalled and offended. It’s a desperate move from a desperate ticket that has been marred throughout September by poor judgement past and present. Its offensive to think that John McCain, a candidate who campaigns as a “change-bringing maverick” and who championed campaign reform, believes that he can use the “same old Washington” smear tactics and not expect you to notice.
John McCain has based his platform on “change is coming”, but a more appropriately slogan would be “Change you CAN’T Believe in”. How about change now, buddy?
Republican basers and pundits will rally behind McCain’s claims that Obama is a terrorist, Obama is black, Obama is a Muslim, or whatever they try to use against him, but what they don’t realize is the simple fact that middle-ground republicans, independents, and democrats are fed up with these kind of silly, high-school popularity contest politics.
Americans have shown themselves to be intelligent, resolve seeking independent thinkers more than ever these last few weeks. John McCain and the GOP refuse to acknowledge that. This isn’t the same country that elected Bush in 2004. Four years later, people are taking a more active role in government. They care a lot more now about what their representatives are doing because they’ve realized the perils of apathy.
This is a country that is begging for…
