November 4th Marks the Closing Chapter of the American Dark Ages. Today, We Forge Ahead in Hope!

November 4th, 2008 marks the close of a dark chapter in American history. All across the country today, Americans woke up with elation and renewed hope as our united conviction for change becomes one step closer to reality.

This is a historic moment; not just because Obama is African-American, but also because the American people have spoken again with a loud and resounding voice “We will not put up with Tyranny, Corruption, and Greed”.

We are at the dawn of a new era of reform and monumental change in the way our government operates. As President-Elect Obama said last night, “…for 232 years, at each moment when that promise was in jeopardy, ordinary men and women, students and soldiers, farmers and teachers, nurses and janitors found the courage to keep it alive.”

It’s our relentless courage to stand together in difficult times–because we believe we can–that defines us as Americans. We have proven to the world that America is not another corrupt regime, and the spirit of the founders is still alive.

A long and difficult road awaits us, but “We The People” will prevail, because “Yes We Can.”

Fake Virgina Flyer Would Viloate “H.R. 1281″

By now, many of you have heard reports of a flyer being distributed in the battleground state of Virgina. This flyer tells Republican and Independent voters to vote on Tuesday and Democratic voters to vote on Wednesday. The flyer is made more legitimate by the State Seal of Virgina and the explanation that this was decided by an “emergency session of the General Assembly”… “to ease the load”… “and ensure a fair electoral process”.

Fake Virgina Flyer

Fake Virgina Flier

This has been down plaid as a “office joke gone to far”; however, it is quite similar to the flyers circulated back in the 2006 election targeting minority groups and immigrants telling them wrong polling places and polling times. One flyer even stated that if you got just a speeding ticket, then you are ineligible to vote.

Today the Virgina State Police issued a press release stating, “After a thorough investigation into the origins of a fake election flyer that began circulating in the Hampton Roads region last week, the Virginia State Police have determined no criminal activity occurred and no charges will be filed…”

Under the current “Voting Rights Act,” it is a crime to intimidate voters, and the punishment is one year in prison. So YES a crime did take place, if even nobody is dissuaded from voting tomorrow.

Back in 2006, fed up with all the scamming that went on in that election cycle, the Democrats introduced a new bill called “the Deceptive Practices and Voter Intimidation Prevention Act of 2006.”

This legislation, as described by the original press release, “would make it illegal for anyone to knowingly attempt to prevent others from exercising his or her right to vote by providing deceptive information and would require the Attorney General to fully investigate these allegations. The legislation would also require the Attorney General, in conjunction with the…

John McCain: Born in the “USA” (or not?)

A great philosopher once said, “Isn’t it Ironic, don’t ya think? A little too ironic, yeah, I really do think.” Surely, she knew not, what great irony was in store for one John McCain. In a bizarre twist of fate that rivals even the Superbowl Champion Giants defeat of then undefeated Tom Brady and fellow Patriots, Barack Obama is certified ‘made in the USA,’ but John McCain, not so much. You see, recently the government of Hawaii certified, much to right wing dismay and despite nut job republican claims to the contrary, that Barack Obama is, indeed, a natural born citizen. Case closed.

For John McCain, the jury is still out. It always puzzled me as to why John McCain never went after Obama on the natural born citizen angle. After all, that seemed a plausible argument that, if substantial, would be fair game, right? Now it’s clear. People, other than Sarah Palin, who live in glass houses know not to throw stones. While many suspected that Obama had been playing on a technicality and erroneously claiming to be a natural born US citizen, it seems that John McCain’s claim to natural birth is just a teeny tiny bit shaky itself. John McCain, was born in 1936, in the US Canal Zone in Panama, and it wasn’t until 1937 that the Supreme Court extended ‘citizenship’ to the canal zone. So, technically, although born in a US territory, on a US Army base, to US parents, John McCain is ‘ambiguously’ a natural born citizen, and by ambiguously, we mean not.

This is an old issue that the Senate took up in May 2008, when they decided, despite having absolutely no jurisdiction to interpret the constitution, that John McCain was in fact a natural born citizen. This sounds sweet, but in reality, it’s a…
